Western diet is characterized by greater consumption of meat, sweets, and high-fat dairy products. According to an article on DietsInReview.com, it is also referred to as the Standard American Diet, meat-sweet diet, or the Western pattern diet. In an entry by ConsumerHealthDigest.com, it was defined as a diet high in saturated fats, red meats, junk food, and low in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, seafood, and poultry. A typical Western diet can be described as a diet that has low consumption of vegetables and foods that contain enzymes, and high consumption of sugary beverages, processed foods, industrial animal products, and modern wheat products.
This type of diet is not beneficial. It is one of the main causes of obesity. It is also one of the causes of the rise in weight-related conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. In addition, it may also affect the nervous system. Some studies show that middle-aged adults who are overweight and obese have a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other types of age-related cognitive dementia than people with normal weight. Other studies also show that because of high intake of a Western diet and the accumulation of too much body fat, children as young as seven years old may suffer from some types of memory impairment.
Food items typically found in Western diet include modern wheat products, meat, milk, cheese, cheeseburgers, french fries, large-sized sodas, sports drinks, fruit juices, and deep-dish pizza. A typical breakfast meal on this diet may consist of white flour pancakes with a side of sausage, with whole milk and syrup. For lunch, it may consist of a fastfood burger, french fries, and a sugary drink. For dinner, it may consist of fried chicken or meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. Lastly, for desserts and snacks, it may include potato chips, cookies, ice cream, candy bars, and other processed snack foods. Moreover, the ingredients typically found in these food are high-fructose corn syrup, trans fat or partially hydrogenated oils, sugar, bleached, enriched flours, food coloring, artificial flavors, and other chemical additives that do not include any nutritional value.
This type of diet does not support any body system; instead it can harm the digestive, nervous, and cardiovascular systems.
