Desmoplastic tumors or demoplastic small round cell tumors (DSRCT) are a rare form of soft tissue cancer (sarcoma) that typically develop in the abdomen. These tumors are formed by small, round cancer cells surrounded by scar-like tissue and is frequently found in the peritoneum, the tissue that lines the inside of the abdomen and pelvis. The tumors can spread to the omentum, lymph nodes, and liver.
The exact cause and mechanism of the formation of desmoplastic tumors remain unknown. Nevertheless, these tumors are believed to develop as a result of genetic defects that occurred on account of certain chromosomal exchanges. The genetic change involved in desmoplastic tumors is acquired throughout a person’s lifetime and is not inherited. Desmoplastic tumor cells have a characteristic genetic change that involves a translocation between chromosomes 11 and 22, which is important in differentiating from other similar tumors.
Desmoplastic tumors typically affect young male children and young men in the 10 to 30 years age group.
The known side effects of desmoplastic tumors include pain or a lump in the abdomen, cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, difficulty having a bowel movement and/or passing gas, and abdominal swelling. Other side effects may also include back pain, gastrointestinal obstruction, loss of appetite, ascites, cachexia, anemia, thyroid conditions, hormonal conditions, kidney problems, urological problems, blood clots, and masses in the testes, breast, vagina, ovaries, and uterus.
The body systems harmed by desmoplastic tumors include the digestive, immune, and lymphatic systems as the tumor cells affect the organs in these systems.
There is no information on what foods or nutrients specifically prevent desmoplastic tumors, but here is a list of foods and nutrients that can help treat and/or prevent cancers in general:
Treatment options for desmoplastic tumors may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, and stem cell transplantation.
